Please join us for the opening of Rod Coyne's new exhibition entitled 'Mist and Reality' on Thursday 22nd May at 7pm at Dalkey Arts Gallery, located at 19 Railway Road, Dalkey, Co. Dublin.
"Mist and Reality" is a body of work created during the first four months of 2008. These images are collected from the east to the west of Ireland, from the Irish sea crossed by St Patrick, to the Atlantic coast where St Brendan set sail and the ancient monks of the Skelligs kept the last light of Christianity burning in their horizon cathedral. The thread is always water: river, lake, stream, sea, and ocean. Rod Coyne goes to these places of mythology and beauty and just paints what he sees.
A good friend of Rod's gives his explanation for this style of work:
"There is no concern if you are simply working with what is in front of you. Here is your material, there is your inspiration; now go! Then the rain falls, the subject recedes into the fading light of mist and clouds. Curiously, hail follows, perhaps a bout of sun. A painter is immediately confronted by the natural elements of his surroundings; he looks up; his studio is vast and unrelenting. His subject grows larger as the pictorial subject/image he seeks diminishes. A painting itself stands as a testament to one's time well spent. Plein Air at its finest, reveals not just the proposed subject in all its natural beauty, but the experience of creating that subject in nature throughout a unique moment in time."

The exhibition will run from Thursday Thursday 22 May until 14 June 2008 and is free to the public.
